Hadith 259

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever attributes to me something which I have not said, let him take his place in the Fire," "and whoever is consulted by his Muslim brother and gives him wrong advice, he has betrayed the one who consulted him," "and whoever gives a wrong fatwa without knowledge (and the one who asked acts upon it), then its sin will be upon the one who gave the fatwa."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The chain of narration of this hadith is weak; however, its first sentence, “Whoever fabricates...from the Fire,” is established through other authentic chains, and in fact, it is mutawatir (mass-transmitted). This means that deliberately or unintentionally attributing a lie to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a cause for entering Hellfire. Therefore, utmost caution must be exercised when speaking in reference to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

➋ As for giving advice to a Muslim, there is an authentic statement from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding this: “When he seeks your counsel, then advise him sincerely.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2162)
