It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laugh in such a way that his throat became visible. He (peace be upon him) would only smile. Whenever he (peace be upon him) saw clouds or a windstorm, worry would become apparent on his face. She says that I asked: O Messenger of Allah! People become happy when they see clouds, hoping that it will rain, but I see that when you see clouds, signs of displeasure appear on your face? He (peace be upon him) replied: "O Aisha! What assurance do I have that there is not a punishment in it? A people were punished with a severe wind, and when that people saw the punishment, they said: This is a cloud that will bring us rain."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ In this, there is mention of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that when he smiled, he would not laugh loudly, rather his usual practice was to smile (tabassum), and occasionally he would laugh in such a way that his premolar teeth would become visible.
➋ In one narration, he forbade excessive laughter. From the narration about smiling, one might suspect that he himself was always smiling. However, Aisha radi Allahu anha clarified explicitly that the kind of laughter which is prohibited, he never engaged in, and smiling is merely an expression of happiness, which he would do, and this is not prohibited; rather, it is desirable so that another Muslim may become happy. Furthermore, he was always in a state of fear of Allah, to the extent that if clouds ever appeared, he would become fearful of Allah’s punishment, dreading that perhaps, like the previous nations, we too might be destroyed.
