Hadith 248

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard a statement from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from which Allah benefited me. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "When you search for people's faults out of doubts and suspicions about them, you will corrupt them." Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: That is why I do not search for people's faults and corrupt them.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ "Benefited," meaning that during the days of my caliphate, I acted upon your statement and gained much benefit from it.

➋ When people are viewed with suspicion, they become corrupted, and sometimes it happens that a person has no evil in him, but when he is accused, he ends up committing it. Therefore, one should not seek out faults in people. Often, if someone does have a fault but it is not exposed, it becomes suppressed and eventually disappears on its own.

➌ Those in authority and responsibility must certainly keep this hadith in view, because the demands of their position and rank require that they overlook people's faults. Otherwise, if they hold people accountable for every matter and pursue their weaknesses, society becomes corrupted. It was said to Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu that drops of wine were dripping from so-and-so's beard. He replied: We have been forbidden from spying; if something becomes apparent to us, then we will hold him accountable for it. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 4090)
