Hadith 234

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ، عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ، عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي قُرَّةَ الْكِنْدِيِّ قَالَ‏:‏ عَرَضَ أَبِي عَلَى سَلْمَانَ أُخْتَهُ، فَأَبَى وَتَزَوَّجَ مَوْلاَةً لَهُ، يُقَالُ لَهَا‏:‏ بُقَيْرَةُ، فَبَلَغَ أَبَا قُرَّةَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ بَيْنَ حُذَيْفَةَ وَسَلْمَانَ شَيْءٌ، فَأَتَاهُ يَطْلُبُهُ، فَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّهُ فِي مَبْقَلَةٍ لَهُ، فَتَوَجَّهَ إِلَيْهِ، فَلَقِيَهُ مَعَهُ زَبِيلٌ فِيهِ بَقْلٌ، قَدْ أَدْخَلَ عَصَاهُ فِي عُرْوَةِ الزَّبِيلِ، وَهُوَ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ، فَقَالَ‏:‏ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ، مَا كَانَ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ حُذَيْفَةَ‏؟‏ قَالَ‏:‏ يَقُولُ سَلْمَانُ‏: ﴿‏وَكَانَ الإِنْسَانُ عَجُولاً‏﴾ [الإسراء : 11]‏، فَانْطَلَقَا حَتَّى أَتَيَا دَارَ سَلْمَانَ، فَدَخَلَ سَلْمَانُ الدَّارَ فَقَالَ‏:‏ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ، ثُمَّ أَذِنَ لأَبِي قُرَّةَ، فَدَخَلَ، فَإِذَا نَمَطٌ مَوْضُوعٌ عَلَى بَابٍ، وَعِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ لَبِنَاتٌ، وَإِذَا قُرْطَاطٌ، فَقَالَ‏:‏ اجْلِسْ عَلَى فِرَاشِ مَوْلاَتِكَ الَّتِي تُمَهِّدُ لِنَفْسِهَا، ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُهُ فَقَالَ‏:‏ إِنَّ حُذَيْفَةَ كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ بِأَشْيَاءَ، كَانَ يَقُولُهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَضَبِهِ لأَقْوَامٍ، فَأُوتَى فَأُسْأَلُ عَنْهَا‏؟‏ فَأَقُولُ‏:‏ حُذَيْفَةُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُ، وَأَكْرَهُ أَنْ تَكُونَ ضَغَائِنُ بَيْنَ أَقْوَامٍ، فَأُتِيَ حُذَيْفَةُ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ‏:‏ إِنَّ سَلْمَانَ لاَ يُصَدِّقُكَ وَلاَ يُكَذِّبُكَ بِمَا تَقُولُ، فَجَاءَنِي حُذَيْفَةُ فَقَالَ‏:‏ يَا سَلْمَانُ ابْنَ أُمِّ سَلْمَانَ، فَقُلْتُ يَا حُذَيْفَةُ ابْنَ أُمِّ حُذَيْفَةَ، لَتَنْتَهِيَنَّ، أَوْ لَأَكْتُبَنَّ فِيكَ إِلَى عُمَرَ، فَلَمَّا خَوَّفْتُهُ بِعُمَرَ تَرَكَنِي، وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏ ”مِنْ وَلَدِ آدَمَ أَنَا، فَأَيُّمَا عَبْدٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي لَعَنْتُهُ لَعْنَةً، أَوْ سَبَبْتُهُ سَبَّةً، فِي غَيْرِ كُنْهِهِ، فَاجْعَلْهَا عَلَيْهِ صَلاةً‏۔“
Amr bin Abu Qura Kindi narrates that my father offered Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) to marry his sister, but he refused and married his freed slave woman, Baqrah. Then Abu Qura found out that there was some displeasure between Sayyiduna Salman and Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with them both). He went to them and found out that they had gone to a vegetable field. He went there and met them, and saw that they had a basket with vegetables in it. They had put a stick through the handle of the basket and placed it on their shoulder. Abu Qura said: O Abu Abdullah! What grievance is there between you and Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him)? Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: «﴿وَکَانَ الإِنْسَانُ عَجُولاً﴾» [الإسراء: 11] "Man is ever hasty." Then both of them left and came to the house of Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house and greeted (with salam), then gave permission to Abu Qura, so he also entered. He saw that there was a sheet placed at the door, and near its head were some raw bricks, and nearby there was a thick mattress like a saddle. He (Sayyiduna Salman) said (to me): Sit on the bed of my slave woman which she spreads for herself. Then they started talking and explained that Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate to people those things which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would say in anger about someone. People would come to me and ask about it, so I would say: Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) knows more about what he narrates. And I did not like (that because of such things which are not to be mentioned) malice should arise among people. Someone went to Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said that Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) neither confirms nor denies your statements. So Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me and said: O Salman son of Umm Salman! (Did you say such a thing?), so I said: O Hudhaifah son of Umm Hudhaifah! Refrain from narrating such things, otherwise I will write to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about you. When I frightened him by mentioning Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he left me and went away. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: "(O Allah!) I am also from the children of Adam, so if I have cursed or spoken harshly to any individual of my ummah while he was not deserving of it, then make it a mercy for him."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu was a distinguished Companion and the confidant of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had given him information regarding the hypocrites. Salman’s radi Allahu anhu position was that if the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, in specific circumstances, expressed displeasure about someone or informed about the hypocrites, and now those individuals have passed away and their descendants are Muslim, or there is some other situation, then there is no need to mention these matters now, because this would unnecessarily create rancor. Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu became displeased at this statement.
➋ From this hadith, it is understood that when explaining issues, one must take into account the manner and the benefit (maslahah). Speaking the truth does not mean that a person adopts such a manner that causes discord to arise.
➌ Working in the fields, carrying weights, and serving one’s family are from among the etiquettes (adab); for this reason, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned this hadith in al-Adab al-Mufrad.
