It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The good and bad deeds of my Ummah were presented before me, and among their good deeds I saw that a harmful thing was removed from the road, and among their bad deeds I saw phlegm that was spat in the mosque and was not covered with earth."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: ﴿فَمَنْیَّعْمَلْمِثْقَالَذَرَّۃٍخَیْرًایَّرَہٗ() وَمَنْیَّعْمَلْمِثْقَالَذَرَّۃٍشَرًّایَّرَہٗ ﴾ (Az-Zalzalah: 7, 8) “Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” Therefore, even a small good deed should not be considered insignificant; it is possible that it becomes the cause of salvation. And a minor evil should also not be considered trivial, for it may be that one is held accountable for it.
➋ The good and bad deeds of the Ummah were shown to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam; from this, it is understood that he was not aware of them by himself. Therefore, those who consider him to be ‘Alim al-Ghayb (Knower of the Unseen) are mistaken.
➌ On the Day of Judgment, when the value of good deeds will be realized, a person will understand how precious the moments of life were. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((لا تَحِقْرَنَّمِنَالْمَعُرُوْفِشَیْئٍا)) “Do not consider any act of goodness insignificant.” (Sahih Muslim, Al-Birr wa As-Silah, Hadith: 2626)
➍ The ruling regarding spitting in the mosque pertains to the early period of Islam when mosques were unpaved. At that time, if someone spat and then covered it with soil, it was permissible. If even today a mosque is of that kind, then spitting and covering it with soil would be correct. However, nowadays, most mosques have carpets and solid floors, so spitting in such mosques is not allowed. For this, one should use a cloth or something similar, as this method of spitting is mentioned in the hadith. (Bukhari: 405)
