It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: It was said: O Messenger of Allah! The wealthy have taken all the reward and merit; they pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, and they give charity from their surplus wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Has Allah not made for you that which you can give as charity? For every ‘Subhan Allah’ and ‘Alhamdulillah’ you say, there is the reward of charity, and your intimacy with your wife is also charity.” It was asked: Is there charity even in fulfilling one’s desire? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If he fulfills it in a forbidden way, is there not sin upon him? In the same way, if he fulfills it in a lawful way, there is reward for him.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ From this narration, it is understood that wealth is a bounty from Allah Ta'ala, provided that it is accompanied by obedience to Allah. Otherwise, it becomes a source of misery, because the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) expressed envy towards those companions who were wealthy and spent their wealth in the way of Allah, and it was the virtue of this spending that they mentioned to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➋ To desire to spend wealth is a good aspiration, but if one does not possess wealth, other paths of goodness can be adopted, and the virtue of spending in the way of Allah (fi sabilillah) can still be attained. In Sahih Muslim (1009), it is stated that helping a person mount his ride, carrying his belongings, speaking good words, walking towards the prayer, and removing something harmful from the path are all acts of charity (sadaqah). This charity is within the capacity of every person.
➌ Committing adultery is evil and a sin, and refraining from it is to abstain from evil and wrongdoing. In the previous hadith, it was mentioned that abstaining from evil and wrongdoing is also charity (sadaqah), so how much more so would lawful acts be a cause for reward.
➍ According to the majority of scholars, if in permissible matters (mubah), the intention is to comply with the commands of Allah, then that too is a cause for reward. Similarly, if the purpose of marriage (nikah) or intimacy (mubasharah) is chastity and seeking offspring, then that is charity (sadaqah); that is, just as nearness to Allah is attained through charity, so too are other righteous deeds a means to this.
