It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by an animal that had been branded, and smoke was coming out of its nostrils because of the branding. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "May the curse of Allah be upon the one who did this. No person should ever brand the face, nor strike it."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Regarding the permissibility and impermissibility of branding animals or humans, evidence is found for both views. The preferred opinion is as follows:
• Branding the face of any animal or human is impermissible and haram.
• It is permissible to brand a human on a part of the body other than the face due to illness or similar reasons; however, it is better to avoid this.
• It is permissible to brand animals on parts other than the face, but branding animals of zakat and jizyah (as a distinguishing mark) is recommended (mustahabb).
➋ As for striking on the face, it is prohibited to strike the face of both animals and humans, because the face is honorable. However, this prohibition is more severe in the case of humans.
