Hadith 171

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Uqbah bin ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him): I was beating my slave when suddenly I heard a voice from behind me: “Abu Mas’ud! Know that Allah has more power over you than you have over him.” I turned around and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! I set him free for the sake of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you had not done so, the fire of Hell would certainly have touched you.” Or he said: “The fire would certainly have engulfed you.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The meaning of this hadith is that although it is permissible to administer disciplinary punishment to a slave or servant, as is understood from the narration of Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), if there is excess in this, then the matter becomes very serious. To beat them without reason can become a cause for entering Hellfire.
➋ This hadith shows that performing a good deed immediately after committing a sin erases the effects of that sin, and doing so is a commendable act. In fact, the Shari’ah texts encourage that if a sin is committed, one should perform a good deed immediately thereafter.
