Hadith 166

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Laqit bin Sabrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). And the shepherd brought a kid of a goat into the enclosure. (The Prophet, peace be upon him, ordered a goat to be slaughtered) and said: "Do not worry. We have a hundred goats, and we do not let them exceed a hundred. When the shepherd brings a newly born kid, we slaughter a goat in its place." Among the things the Prophet (peace be upon him) said at that time was also: "Do not beat your wife like a slave-girl, and when performing ablution, exaggerate in rinsing your nose except when you are fasting (then do not exaggerate)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From the statement, “Do not beat your wife like a slave-girl,” it is understood that if a slave or slave-girl commits an act of disobedience, they may be given an appropriate punishment, and a wife may also be struck for disciplinary purposes; however, the beating should not be severe.
➋ It is understood from this that exaggerating in drawing water into the nose during ablution (wudu) is obligatory, but in the state of fasting, this obligation is lifted. The method is that water should be drawn in through the nose by inhaling.
➌ Eating meat is not extravagance, and making special arrangements for a guest is also permissible. However, if the arrangement is not specifically for the guest but is just the usual meal, then the guest should be informed so that he does not think that special effort was made for him. Additionally, this teaches that one should not try to take undue credit for something one has not done.
