Hadith 158

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The last words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were: "Be steadfast in prayer, guard the prayer, and fear Allah regarding your slaves."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this hadith, one can gauge the importance of showing kindness to slaves and subordinates, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made a bequest regarding this even in his final moments. People make every possible effort to fulfill the last bequest of their elders, but alas! The Muslim Ummah, having set aside the bequest of their master and benefactor, does not show even the slightest good treatment to their subordinates; rather, they are intent on squeezing them dry. Similarly, they have left no stone unturned in neglecting the prayers as well.

➋ In one narration, the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam last words were: “Allahumma bil-rafiq al-a‘la” (“O Allah, [join me] with the Highest Companion”). The reconciliation here is that this was his last bequest regarding the rights of people. However, several bequests from him during his final illness are narrated, but among them there is nowhere any mention of the caliphate and succession of Ali radi Allahu anhu.

➌ This hadith also shows that at the time of death, one should bequeath to one’s heirs and relatives about the prayer and other virtuous deeds.
