Benefits and Issues:
➊ The greed for wealth and children is a part of human conscience. A person spends his entire life striving and accumulating wealth, but in the end, he leaves everything behind and bids farewell to this world. Until his dying breath, “my wealth, my wealth” remains on his tongue, but in reality, that wealth is no longer his; rather, it has already become the property of his heirs. His true wealth is only that which he spends in the way of Allah, and for which he will receive reward from Allah.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“When the time of death for the son of Adam draws near, he says, ‘Give this much to so-and-so and that much to so-and-so,’ even though by then it has already become theirs.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 1419)
➋ After death, the wealth that will benefit a person is only that which he spent in the way of Allah to please Allah; the wealth left behind in the world will be of no use to him. In fact, it is quite possible that it may become a source of torment for him. For to neglect the Hereafter and worry about the future of one’s heirs, to accumulate wealth for one’s children out of concern for what their circumstances might be—this, in a way, is also having a bad opinion of Allah. It is a mistaken notion to think that sustenance for the children came from oneself, and that after one’s departure, who knows what will happen to them. Often, the situation is quite the opposite: most of the time, the wealth accumulated by parents is squandered recklessly by the children, because they did not endure any hardship in earning it.
