Hadith 143

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A Muslim whose three children die (and he remains patient), the Fire will not touch him, except to fulfill an oath."

Benefits and Issues:
The point is that any man or woman whose three children died in childhood, and who exhibited patience while hoping for reward from Allah, as mentioned in other hadiths, then Allah, exalted is He, will not admit such a person into Hellfire. However, the person will still have to pass over the bridge (Sirat) that is over Hell, and this has been described as “fulfilling the oath.” The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:

“There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell).”

Hafiz Ibn Hajar has mentioned several explanations regarding the oath:
➊ ...Before “In minkum...etc.” there is an omitted oath.
➋ ...An oath has already been mentioned earlier: “By your Lord, We will surely gather them...etc.” The verse in question is connected to the response of that oath.
➌ ...At the end of the present verse is “Hatman Maqdiya” (“a decree absolutely determined”); these words convey the meaning of an oath. (Fath al-Bari: 3/124)
