Abu Murrah, the freed slave of Umm Hani bint Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with her), reported that I rode with Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) towards his land in the region of ‘Aqiq. When he entered his land, he raised his voice and said: “O my mother, peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.” His mother replied with similar words. Then Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “May Allah have mercy on you as you raised me when I was a child.” His mother said: “My son! May Allah give you the best reward and be pleased and happy with you, just as you have shown kindness to me now that you are grown.” The narrator of the hadith, Musa bin Ya’qub, says: The name of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) is Abdullah bin Amr.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ In every nation, there is a customary way of saying certain words and a specific manner of meeting when people encounter each other. In Islam, the manner of meeting is truly unique, which is not only an expression of love but also an encouragement towards goodness and the fulfillment of the right of love. The one who offers salam (greeting of peace) is making a supplication for peace and goodness for his brother, and is also informing him that you are safe and secure from any harm from me.
➋ From this hadith, it is understood that one should offer salam upon entering the house, and it is also established that if there is no fear of temptation (fitnah) or the like, a man may offer salam to a woman, just as Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) offered salam to his mother. Its legitimacy is also established from some other ahadith, as is mentioned regarding the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➌ It is permissible to acknowledge someone’s favor in their presence, and this does not fall under the category of praising someone to their face. And when supplicating for someone, one should mention their righteous deeds, because such an act is more likely to lead to the acceptance of the supplication.
➍ When someone does a good deed for another, and in response the recipient says “Jazak Allahu khayran” (may Allah reward you with goodness), then he has indeed fulfilled the right. Just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever has a favor done for him and says in response ‘Jazak Allahu khayran,’ then he has fully expressed his gratitude.” (Sahih Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 1657)
