It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Let not your love make you insane, and let not your enmity incite you to destruction. I asked: How is that? He said: That when you love, you love like a child, madly, considering everything to be for him alone; and when you bear enmity, you wish that the one you hate be destroyed altogether.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ A Muslim is bound by the limits set by Allah in matters of love and hatred. The standard for his love and hatred should be the person of Allah, the Exalted, and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he should adopt the path of moderation in every matter. Even hatred towards an enemy should be within a certain limit. Instead of wishing for his destruction and ruin, a person should desire his guidance. This is the very conduct of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Destroying someone is not an act of bravery.
➋ It should be remembered that what is meant here is love for the sake of Allah. Love based on lust and romantic relationships between boys and girls are absolutely forbidden in every circumstance, and this is disobedience to Allah.
