Hadith 1311

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give him permission to enter, he is a bad man of his tribe." So when he entered, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to him gently. I said: O Messenger of Allah! You said what you said about this man, then you spoke to him gently? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aisha! The worst of people is the one whom people avoid because of his foul language and bad speech."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The meaning of the hadith is that it is permissible to outwardly show respect to a foul-mouthed person in order to protect oneself from his mischief, so that he does not cause harm through his abusive speech. Similarly, it is permissible to inform people about a sinful (fasiq) person so that they may remain safe from his mischief, and this does not fall under the category of backbiting (ghibah).
➋ What the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said about him was the truth, and the way he dealt with him was based on good character.
➌ This person was ‘Uyaynah ibn Hisn al-Fazari. He was not a Muslim, but he used to give the impression that he was a Muslim. Later, he became an apostate and was brought as a prisoner to Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu). An incident of his insolence with our master ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) is also recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.
