Hadith 1303

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: When a person spits phlegm in front of people, he should cover it with both hands until his phlegm falls to the ground. And when a person is fasting, he should apply oil so that the effect of fasting is not visible on him.

Benefits and Issues:
The chain of narration of this report is weak; in it, Abdur Rahman bin Iyash (or Abbas) is majhool (unknown). However, when coughing or sneezing, one should cover the mouth with the hand or a piece of cloth, etc., so that saliva or the like does not reach those sitting nearby.
