It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and sought permission to enter. He (i.e., I) granted him permission to enter while his head was in the hand of a slave girl who was combing his hair. He tried to free his head from the slave girl, but Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Let her comb it. He submitted: O Leader of the Believers! If you had sent me a message, I would have come to you. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The matter was mine (therefore, I should have come myself).
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, we learn of the humility and modesty of Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu), and it also becomes clear that the noble Companions (Sahabah) held immense respect for one another.
➋ Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu) adopted the example (uswah) of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), for he too would live among the people in this manner and would honor them greatly. During journeys, he would take turns riding the camel with others.
➌ Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu) had gone for a religious matter, which was the issue of inheritance for a grandmother, regarding which he wished to seek the opinion of Hazrat Zayd (radi Allahu anhu).
➍ From this, it is understood that one should go to the homes of scholars to acquire knowledge from them, and that rulers and leaders should adopt the same manner with scholars as Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu) did with Sayyiduna Zayd (radi Allahu anhu).
