Hadith 1272

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، وَمَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالاَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ‏:‏ ”مَنْ لَعِبَ بِالنَّرْدِ فَقَدْ عَصَى اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ‏.‏“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever plays chess has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger."

Benefits and Issues:
Chess and similar games are impermissible and prohibited, whether or not they involve gambling. If gambling is involved, then their reprehensibility and abhorrence increase even further.
