Hadith 1262

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever among you swears an oath and says in his oath: 'By al-Lat and al-'Uzza!' he should say: 'La ilaha illallah' again. And whoever says to his companion: 'Come, let me gamble with you,' he should give charity."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Whoever swears an oath by Lat or Manat, considering them as deities, becomes an apostate and exits the fold of Islam. Even one who swears by them out of reverence is a polytheist (mushrik), because he denies the Qur’an. Such a person must also renew his faith (iman).
➋ Swearing an oath by other than Allah is shirk (polytheism), regardless of which created being it is.
➌ Gambling is a sin and a major sin (kabirah). Inviting others to it is also a major sin; therefore, as expiation for this sin, one should give charity (sadaqah).
➍ Commonly among us, the phrase is used: “Make a bet with me.” This phrase also falls under the same category, because the mentioned condition is just another name for gambling; therefore, it is necessary to avoid it.
