Hadith 1260

حَدَّثَنَا الأُوَيْسِيُّ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلاَلٍ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ‏:‏ الْمَيْسِرُ‏:‏ الْقِمَارُ‏.‏
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says that (the word) "maysir" mentioned in the Qur'an refers to gambling.

Benefits and Issues:
Every game in which something is staked such that the loser will give it to the winner falls under gambling. However, if the prize is offered by a third party, then it will not be considered gambling.
