It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that I took Abdullah bin Abi Talhah to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day he was born, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a cloak and applying tar to one of his camels. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have dates?" I replied: Yes! I handed the dates to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he chewed them, then opened the child's mouth and put them in. The child began to move his mouth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Dates are beloved to the Ansar." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named the child Abdullah.

Benefits and Issues: Tahneek (chewing and softening a date and placing it in the infant’s mouth) is a Sunnah. One should strive to have the tahneek performed by a pious person. Its method is that the one performing the tahneek chews a date or similar item, mixes it with his saliva, and then applies it to the palate of the child.
