It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, the favorite drink of the people of Madinah was made from dried and fresh dates. Once, I was serving alcohol to the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the house of Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), when a man passed by and said: "Alcohol has been made unlawful." They did not even ask when it was made unlawful or say that they would investigate; rather, they said: "O Anas! Dispose of this alcohol." Then they took a midday nap at the house of Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) until the intensity of the sun decreased, and they performed ghusl (ritual bath). Then Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) applied perfume to them, and then they went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the matter was exactly as that man had said. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: After that, they never even touched alcohol to their lips.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ From this hadith, we learn of the spirit of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) in submitting themselves before the command of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): when his command came before them, they accepted it immediately without delay. This should be the hallmark of a Muslim. ➋ From this, it is understood that in the summer, it is better to perform the Zuhr prayer with some delay. Additionally, the regularity of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) in taking a midday nap (qaylulah) is also established. ➌ In this hadith, there is advice for those who claim to be lovers and devotees of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): a true lover is one who, when the beloved’s word comes before him, immediately complies with it. “As soon as the command of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is given, the head is bowed in submission.” ➍ From this, it is evident that a solitary report (khabar wahid) is also a proof in matters of rulings.
