It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the night becomes calm, reduce your movement, for none of you knows which of Allah's creatures He spreads out. Close the doors, tie the mouths of the water skins, cover the vessels, and extinguish the lamps."
Benefits and Issues: ➊ The original text is "Iyyakum wa al-samar." "Samar" means to converse at night. Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has stated in "Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad" that perhaps this is a mistake (wahm) of Ibn ‘Ajlan. From the context, it is evident that it is "al-sayr" (traveling), and forthcoming explicit narrations also support this. Therefore, we have translated it as "sayr" (traveling). ➋ At night, one should sleep after closing the doors so that Shaytan does not cause any harm, and when closing them, one should say "Bismillah." Safes and the like should also be closed while saying "Bismillah."
