Hadith 1221

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “(At night) close the doors, tie the mouths of the water-skins, turn the vessels upside down or cover the vessels, and extinguish the lamps, because the devil does not open a closed (door), nor untie a knot, nor uncover a covered vessel. And indeed, the mouse is mischievous; it burns people's houses.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), lamps were lit with oil, and the wick that burned was sometimes pulled by a mouse, which could set the house on fire. Such an incident actually occurred once during his lifetime, due to which he instructed that the lamp be extinguished before sleeping. Even in the present era, many losses occur due to electrical short circuits; therefore, one should turn off bulbs and the like before sleeping.

➋ In one narration, there is an instruction to say "Bismillah" when closing the door, and there is also the addition that children should not be allowed to go outside at dusk, because at that time the jinn and devils spread out on the earth.

➌ The reason for covering vessels or turning them upside down is also mentioned in other hadiths: that in one night of the year, a disease descends, and it falls into any vessel that is left uncovered. Therefore, vessels should be kept covered.
