Hadith 122

Amr bin Mu'adh Al-Ashhali narrates from his grandmother (Hawwa bint Yazid) رضي الله عنها that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "O believing women! None of you should consider insignificant a gift for her neighbor, even if it is a burnt hoof of a goat."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ By "kara’" is meant the part from the knee to the foot. There is very little meat on it, and generally it was not given as a gift because it was considered insignificant. Then, for those who slaughtered camels, what value would a goat’s hoof have in their eyes? The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) encouraged that the exchange of gifts should continue, even if it is a trivial thing that is given to one another, and the one receiving the gift should look at the sentiments of the giver rather than the value of the gift or present.

➋ Women were specifically addressed because, firstly, such matters are generally the responsibility of women; the duty of cooking is entrusted to them, and accepting or rejecting gifts is also their responsibility. They tend to react quickly. Therefore, they are encouraged to create an atmosphere of mutual affection and are instructed not to feel ashamed in giving even a small thing as a gift. Similarly, if someone gives a trivial thing as a present, it should also be accepted with happiness of the heart. Who knows with how much emotion, after leaving aside how many others, the giver is presenting it to you.

➌ Scholars should continue to admonish and advise women regarding matters that are specifically related to them, because this benefits the believers.

➍ In this hadith, there is encouragement for the exchange of gifts, because it increases love and makes the environment of society peaceful, and also makes the conduct of life easier.
