Hadith 1217

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When any one of you goes to bed, he should take the edge of the inner part of his lower garment and dust off the bed with it, and say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), for he does not know what may have come onto the bed after him. Then, when he intends to lie down, he should lie on his right side and recite this supplication: 'O my Lord! You are pure, in Your name I have laid down my side, and by Your help I will rise. If You take my soul, then forgive it, and if You release it, then protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.'"

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The purpose is that if it has been a while since the bed was laid out, or if it is dark, then one should dust off the bed before sleeping on it, as it is possible that some harmful creature may have come onto it. Especially when returning to bed after getting up at night, one must dust off the bed.
➋ From this, it is understood that one should protect oneself from harmful and injurious things, and this is not contrary to reliance (tawakkul) upon Allah.
