Narrated from Sayyiduna Salim bin Jabir Hijimi (may Allah be pleased with him) that I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was sitting with his knees drawn up, wrapped in a sheet, and the ends of the sheet were hanging over his blessed feet. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Advise me. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Fear Allah, and do not consider any good deed insignificant, even if you pour some water from your bucket into the vessel of one who asks for water, or speak to your brother with a smiling, cheerful face. And avoid letting your lower garment hang below the ankles, for this is out of arrogance, and Allah does not like it. And if someone reproaches you for something he knows about you, do not reproach him for a fault you know about him. Leave it; its burden will be upon him and its reward will be for you. And do not revile anything.” The narrator says: After that, I never reviled any human or animal.
Benefits and Issues: The definition of ihtiba’ has already been mentioned in previous hadiths. If the entire body is covered with a single sheet and no separate trousers (shalwar) or similar garment is worn, then ihtiba’ is impermissible because there is a risk of the private parts (‘awrah) being exposed. However, if trousers (shalwar) or similar are worn separately, then there is no harm. The hadith refers to the second situation. It is also understood that letting trousers or a waist-wrapper (izaar) hang below the ankles is itself arrogance, and one should not let any opportunity for a good deed slip by, because one does not know which act Allah Ta’ala may like.
