Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ It is mentioned in the hadith that three things, if presented, should not be refused: a cushion, milk, and perfume. However, if a person takes them and keeps them without using them, it is permissible, as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) took the cushion and placed it in the middle. This also shows his humility and modesty, that he did not like to distinguish himself from others.
➋ It is permissible to spread a sheet or the like to protect oneself from dust and similar things. Furthermore, respecting elders and honoring guests is obligatory.
➌ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) considered his visit to their homes an honor for themselves and left no stone unturned in showing him respect.
➍ Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (radi Allahu anhuma) was a very devout young man. He used to fast during the day and stand in prayer (tahajjud) at night. Even after marriage, he continued this practice. When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was informed of his situation, he advised him not to put himself through so much hardship and to fulfill the rights of his wife as well. At most, he should fast fifteen days in a month and complete the Qur’an in three days.
➎ When there is no fear of showing off (riya’), a person may mention his or his children’s good deeds to others, as Sayyiduna Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) informed his students. Moreover, there is a lesson in this for the youth who waste the precious part of their lives in frivolities and are negligent in fulfilling their obligations.
➏ Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr remained steadfast in this practice until the end of his life. However, when he faced difficulties in old age, he would say: “I wish I had accepted the concession given by you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).” Because even if a deed is small, its continuity and permanence is beloved to Allah, the Exalted. Also, a person has discretion in his voluntary (nafl) worship to set its amount as he wishes, but inviting people to a specific number (as a fixed practice) would fall under the category of innovation (bid‘ah).
