Hadith 1164

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rifa’ah ‘Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was delivering a sermon. I said: O Messenger of Allah! A stranger has come to you who asks about his religion. He does not know what his religion is. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left the sermon and came to me. Then a chair was brought, and I think its legs were made of iron. (Humaid says: In my opinion, it was made of black wood, which he thought was iron.) So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat on it. Then he began to teach me the commands that Allah had taught him. Then afterwards, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) completed his sermon.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, we learn about the noble character of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), how exemplary his morals were, and how great a teacher he was. Every teacher should follow in his footsteps.
➋ Students should observe proper etiquette and respect towards the teacher and ask questions in the best manner, and the teacher should also adopt a compassionate attitude like that of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➌ If a teacher is delivering a lesson and someone asks about faith (iman), especially if the person is a new Muslim, the teacher should leave the sermon and explain it to him first.
➍ If a student comes to seek knowledge even at an inappropriate time, one should not feel annoyed; rather, he should be taught the commands of Allah.
➎ The connection with the chapter is that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sat on a chair, and a chair is also a type of throne. From this, the permissibility of sitting on a throne is established, even if others are sitting below.
➏ It is permissible to place a chair or similar item in the mosque.
