Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he was sitting on a bed or couch made of date-palm rope. Under his blessed head was a leather pillow stuffed with date-palm fibers. There was no cloth between his blessed body and the bed. During this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered and began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him: “Umar! Why are you weeping?” He replied: O Messenger of Allah! If I did not know that your status with Allah is far greater than that of Caesar and Chosroes, I would not weep. How much worldly luxury they are living in, and you, O Messenger of Allah, are in the condition that I am seeing. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O Umar! Are you not pleased that for them is the world and for us is the Hereafter?” I said: Why not, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Then it is so.”

Benefits and Issues: A resting place made of wood or iron, raised somewhat above the ground, is called a takht (platform) or charpai (cot/bedstead). Such was the asceticism (zuhd) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he would sit on this charpai made from palm leaves without placing any cloth or bedding upon it. It is also understood from this that sitting on a charpai or takht is not arrogance, provided that the platform is not made of gold or silver.
