Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) one day went out towards one of the gardens of Madinah for a need, and I also followed behind him. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered the garden, I sat at the door. I said: Today, without being told by the Prophet (peace be upon him), I will surely act as his doorkeeper. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) went inside the garden, and after fulfilling his need, he sat on the edge of a well, uncovered his shins, and let his feet hang in the well. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission to enter. I said: Wait, until I seek permission for you. So he waited, and I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr seeks permission to come to you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Give him permission and give him glad tidings of Paradise." So he entered and sat on the right side of the Prophet (peace be upon him), uncovered his shins, and let both his feet hang in the well. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and I said to him as well: Wait, until I seek permission for you from the Prophet (peace be upon him). So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Give him permission to enter and give him glad tidings of Paradise." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sat on the left side of the Prophet (peace be upon him), uncovered his shins, and let his feet hang in the well. The edge of the well was filled, and there was no space left. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, so I said: Stay in your place until I seek permission for you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Give him permission and give him glad tidings of Paradise, and there will be a trial with him." So he entered, and not finding a place to sit with them, he came from the other side, uncovered his shins, and sat facing them, letting both his feet hang in the well. I began to wish that my brother would come, and I began to pray to Allah that He would bring him, but he came only after they had left.
Ibn Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I interpreted this as meaning that the graves of these three would be together, and the grave of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) would be separate.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that uncovering the shins is not contrary to dignity, and if a person does so in a gathering of friends and companions, there is no harm in it.
➋ From this, the absolute entry of the three Caliphs into Paradise is established; therefore, whoever doubts their faith is himself devoid of faith.
➌ When needed, it is permissible to appoint a guard at home.
➍ The meaning of Imam Ibn al-Musayyib rahimahullah’s statement is that the practical manifestation of this hadith occurred in this world in such a way that just as they were sitting at the well, in the same manner they are resting in their graves.
➎ The prophecy of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam regarding Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu was proven absolutely true, and he succeeded in the trial he faced, and after him, the unity of the Ummah was shattered and it became afflicted with discord.
