It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Avoid sitting on the roads." They said: O Messenger of Allah! We have no alternative but to sit in these gatherings. We sit there and talk. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Alright, if you insist, then fulfill the rights of the road." They asked: O Messenger of Allah! What are the rights of the road? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Lowering the gaze, removing harmful things from the road, enjoining good, and forbidding evil."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: It was customary among the Arabs to sit and chat in the open spaces in front of their houses, in the streets, because there were women inside the homes. These gatherings would take place over the pathways, which would also create difficulties for women passing by. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade sitting at these intersections, so the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) expressed their necessity, saying that they did not have arrangements inside their homes, and therefore requested permission for this. Thus, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) granted them permission to hold such gatherings there, but with the aforementioned etiquettes.
