Sayyiduna Harith bin Amr Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was at Mina or Arafat. People had surrounded him. Bedouins were coming; when they saw the blessed face of the Prophet (peace be upon him), they would say: "This is a blessed face." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please seek forgiveness for me. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Allah! Forgive us." I went around and came back and said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray for my forgiveness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Allah! Forgive us." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) began to spit, so he put his hand in front of his mouth and spat into his hand, and then wiped it with his shoe. The Prophet (peace be upon him) disliked that it should touch anyone else.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The point is that if one needs to spit while in a gathering, one should not spit in front of others, because this harms a person's dignity. One should spit into a handkerchief or something similar, and if the ground is unpaved and there is no flooring, then one should place a hand in front of the mouth, turn to the side, spit, and then throw it onto the ground with the hand, rub it in with a shoe or something similar, and cover it with soil so that its trace is not visible and it does not get onto someone else's clothes or belongings.
➋ Regarding seeking forgiveness (istighfar), the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave a warning that one should not limit Allah's vast mercy by seeking forgiveness only for oneself; rather, one should ask for forgiveness for all the believers.
➌ If the ground is paved or there is flooring, then instead of spitting on it, one should spit into a cloth or something similar and then clean it afterwards.
