بَابُ الْجُلُوسِ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِChapter: Sitting on the road
Hadith 1139

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الأَحْمَرُ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ: أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ صِبْيَانُ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا، وَأَرْسَلَنِي فِي حَاجَةٍ، وَجَلَسَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ يَنْتَظِرُنِي حَتَّى رَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ، قَالَ: فَأَبْطَأْتُ عَلَى أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ، فَقَالَتْ: مَا حَبَسَكَ؟ فَقُلْتُ: بَعَثَنِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَاجَةٍ، قَالَتْ: مَا هِيَ؟ قُلْتُ: إِنَّهَا سِرٌّ، قَالَتْ: فَاحْفَظْ سِرَّ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were children. He (peace be upon him) greeted us with salam and sent me for some task, and he sat down on the way and waited for me until I returned. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I was late in going to (my mother) Sayyida Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), so she asked: Why were you late? I said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent me for a task. She asked: For what task did he send you? I said: It was a confidential matter. She said: Then safeguard the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that sitting on pathways is permissible in case of necessity; however, it is essential to fulfill the rights of the pathway, which have been mentioned in other ahadith, such as responding to greetings, lowering the gaze, guiding the one who is lost, and so on.
➋ It is recommended (mustahabb) to teach children good manners, as demonstrated by Sayyidah Umm Sulaym radi Allahu anha instructing Anas radi Allahu anhu not to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
