It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Abi Amrah Ansari (may Allah have mercy on him), he said that when Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed of a funeral, he was delayed, until the people, waiting, sat down in their respective places. Then he came later; when the people saw him, they quickly moved aside from the front and several people stood up so that they could seat him in their place. He said: I will not sit. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "The best gathering is the one which is spacious." Then he moved to the side and sat in the spacious part of the gathering.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has prohibited removing a person from his place in a gathering in order to sit there oneself. If someone would stand up voluntarily for Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), he would still not sit in that person's place. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (radi Allahu anhu) also disliked this manner and instructed that the gathering be made spacious, and then he himself made space and sat to one side.
