Hadith 1126

It is narrated from Anas bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man wrote a letter in front of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): «بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم», to so-and-so. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) forbade him and said: Write it like this: «بسم اللہ». That is, write "he" (هو) and then his name.

Benefits and Issues:
From this, it is understood that the position of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) was that the one writing a letter should write his own name first. However, due to certain reasons, he would sometimes do the opposite as well, because this is not a matter of halal and haram. The issue is one of what is preferable and what is less preferable.
