Hadith 1115

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, that he said: Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, passed by a Christian and greeted him with salam, and he replied. Later, it was told to him that he was a Christian. When he came to know this, he went to him and said: Return my salam to me.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
The intention of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma was to express that a disbeliever (kafir) cannot be initially greeted with salam, because this is a right exclusive to the Muslim. This is because disbelievers and polytheists (mushrik) are not deserving of peace, goodness, and blessings.
