Hadith 1111

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”إِذَا لَقِيتُمُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ، فَلاَ تَبْدَأُوهُمْ بِالسَّلاَمِ، وَاضْطَرُّوهُمْ إِلَى أَضْيَقِهَا.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When you meet polytheists on the road, do not initiate the greeting of peace to them, and force them to the narrowest part of the road."

The point is that there is no need to vacate the path out of respect for them; rather, it is necessary to make them feel their state of disbelief. Furthermore, this narration with these particular words is rare (shaadh), and the preserved wording is that which has already been mentioned under number 1103.
