It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin came to the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and looked inside through a hole in the door. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) picked up an arrow or a spear to poke out the Bedouin’s eye, so he moved back. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If you had remained standing, I would certainly have poked out your eye.”

Benefits and Issues: ➊ The summary of all these narrations is that the command for seeking permission is given because, apart from the presence of womenfolk in the house, a person is often in such a state that he does not wish to appear before others in that condition, or the belongings of the house may be scattered, and a person does not want anyone else to witness this situation. If someone glances inside by peeking, then the very purpose of seeking permission is lost. Now, what is the point of asking for permission? ➋ Such a person should not be allowed to enter, so that he may take a lesson from it.
