Hadith 1088

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Jad'an (may Allah have mercy on him) that I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). He sought permission to enter from the people of a house, and the reply came: Enter in peace. He refused to enter.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
It is not possible from a venerable figure such as Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma that he would have entered without giving salam; therefore, telling him to enter with salam was a jest. That is why Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma turned back. This interpretation is also supported by the narration in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, where it is mentioned that when Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma was told in this manner, "Enter with salam," he would turn back and say, "I do not know whether I should give salam or not." (Al-Musannaf li Ibn Abi Shaybah: 8/647)
