Hadith 1085

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ‏:‏ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ‏:‏ السَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ، السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ، أَيَدْخُلُ عُمَرُ‏؟‏‏.‏
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: «السلام علی رسول الله، السلام علیکم», Can Umar come in?

Benefits and Issues:
One should give the greeting of salam first, and thereafter introduce oneself, such as by asking whether so-and-so is permitted to enter. Similarly, it is permissible to give a special salam to the caliph or any important personality, and then to give salam to all the people.
