Hadith 1079

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Hudaij (may Allah be pleased with him) that I came to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and sought permission to enter. The attendants said to me: Stay in your place, he will come here. I sat near his door. He came out, called for water, performed ablution, and then wiped over his leather socks. So I said: O Commander of the Faithful! Is wiping over the leather socks after urinating? He replied: It is permissible to wipe over the leather socks after urinating or after anything else that breaks ablution.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The point is that if one has to wait sitting at someone’s door, one should not sit directly in front of the door but rather to one side.
➋ Sayyiduna Muawiyah inquired whether wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn) is permissible only after urination or also after defecation and other nullifiers of ablution. Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu replied that wiping over the leather socks is permissible after any nullifier of ablution. In other hadiths, it is mentioned as a condition that the socks or stockings must have been put on after performing ablution (wudu). Furthermore, in the case where a ritual bath (ghusl) becomes obligatory, it is necessary to remove them and perform the ritual bath.
