It is narrated from the companion of the Prophet (ﷺ), Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him), that when the Prophet (ﷺ) came to someone's door to seek permission, he would not stand directly in front of it but would stand to the right or left. If permission was granted, he would enter; otherwise, he would return.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
The purpose of seeking permission is so that the privacy of the household is not compromised, and any personal state that one does not wish to reveal to others remains concealed. If one stands directly in front of the door, there is a risk of seeing inside. Therefore, proper etiquette demands that one should stand to the side while seeking permission.
