It is narrated from Abu Alaniyah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I went to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and said «السلام علیکم», but I was not granted permission to enter. I said «السلام علیکم» again, but still was not granted permission. Then, for the third time, I raised my voice and said «السلام علیکم»: O people of the house! «السلام علیکم». But still, I was not granted permission, so I sat down to one side of the door. Then a boy came out of the house to me and said: Come in, so I entered. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, if you had greeted more than this (three times), you would not have been granted permission. Then I asked him about vessels. For every vessel I asked about, he said: It is forbidden. Until I asked him about the jaf (leather vessel), and he said: It is forbidden. Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Jaf is the vessel whose mouth is covered with leather and tied with a strap.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ The aforementioned hadiths clarify the issue that if a person sends a message saying, "Come to me," and the messenger is also accompanying you, then there is no need to seek permission again. One may enter along with the inviter. ➋ If the inviter is a child, or if there are women, etc., in the house, then it is necessary to pause and seek permission again. Similarly, if a considerable amount of time has passed, it is also necessary to seek permission again. ➌ One should greet with salam three times and wait. If there is no response, one should return. Knocking repeatedly is inappropriate; it is possible that the household members are not in a position to grant permission or, due to some engagement, cannot give immediate permission. ➍ Abu ‘Alaniyyah asked about those vessels in which wine is made, so Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id radi Allahu anhu said that it is forbidden to make nabidh (fermented drink) in them because there is a strong likelihood of intoxication being produced.
