Hadith 1072

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that a man peeped through a hole in the door of the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chamber, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pointed his spear (lance) towards him, and the man withdrew his head.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In both of the aforementioned chapters, the method of seeking permission has been explained: one should stand to the side of the door, offer greetings (salam), and request permission, then remain standing to the side and not directly in front of the entrance.
➋ The purpose of seeking permission is so that one’s gaze does not fall inside and the privacy (purdah) is not compromised. If someone peeks inside, then the very purpose of seeking permission is nullified; therefore, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam strictly forbade this, and if the householders were to injure the eye of such a person, there would be no sin upon them.
➌ From this, it is understood that constructing the four walls of a house is a Sunnah. If a house does not have four walls and someone’s gaze falls inside, then the fault lies with the householders. Furthermore, these narrations demonstrate the protective jealousy (ghayrah) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
