It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), he said: «لَاتَدْخُلُوابُيُوتًاغَيْرَبُيُوتِكُمْحَتَّىتَسْتَأْنِسُواوَتُسَلِّمُواعَلَىأَهْلِهَا»[سورہ النور: 27] "Do not enter anyone's house except your own until you have sought permission and greeted the inhabitants with peace." This ruling is excepted by the verse which is in the following ayah: «لَيْسَعَلَيْكُمْجُنَاحٌأَنْتَدْخُلُوابُيُوتًاغَيْرَمَسْكُونَةٍفِيهَامَتَاعٌلَكُمْوَاللَّهُيَعْلَمُمَاتُبْدُونَوَمَاتَكْتُمُونَ»[سورہ النور: 29] "There is no sin upon you if you enter houses in which no one lives and in which you have belongings. Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ A store or warehouse where no one resides, and which is owned by a person, it is permissible to enter there without permission; however, even there, one should give salam (greeting of peace) in the prescribed manner. ➋ In the verse, permission is mentioned first and salam afterwards. This is a case of precedence and delay (taqdim wa ta’khir). The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has explained its interpretation as follows: first give salam, and then seek permission.
