بَابُ: كَيْفَ نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْحِجَابِ؟Chapter: How the verse of Hijab was revealed

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَسٌ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ ابْنَ عَشْرِ سِنِينَ مَقْدَمَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ، فَكُنَّ أُمَّهَاتِي يُوَطِّوَنَّنِي عَلَى خِدْمَتِهِ، فَخَدَمْتُهُ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ، وَتُوُفِّيَ وَأَنَا ابْنُ عِشْرِينَ، فَكُنْتُ أَعْلَمَ النَّاسِ بِشَأْنِ الْحِجَابِ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَا نَزَلَ مَا ابْتَنَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ، أَصْبَحَ بِهَا عَرُوسًا، فَدَعَى الْقَوْمَ فَأَصَابُوا مِنَ الطَّعَامِ، ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا، وَبَقِيَ رَهْطٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَطَالُوا الْمُكْثَ، فَقَامَ فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْتُ لِكَيْ يَخْرُجُوا، فَمَشَى فَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ، حَتَّى جَاءَ عَتَبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ، ثُمَّ ظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ خَرَجُوا، فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ، فَإِذَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ، فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عَتَبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ، وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ خَرَجُوا، فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ، فَإِذَا هُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا، فَضَرَبَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ السِّتْرَ، وَأَنْزَلَ الْحِجَابَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that at the time of the arrival of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah Tayyibah, he was ten years old. My mothers (my mother and maternal aunt) would encourage me to serve the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so I served him for ten years. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I was twenty years old, therefore I know the issue of hijab very well and more than anyone else. The command of veiling was first revealed when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) and brought her home as a bride. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) invited people to a meal, so they ate and left, but a few people remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They sat for a long time. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went outside, and I also went out so that they would leave. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on, and I kept walking with him until he reached the threshold of the room of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he thought that those people might have left, so he returned, and I also returned. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), but those people were still sitting there, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went back again, and I also went back until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) again reached the threshold of the room of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Upon reaching there, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) estimated that they must have left, so he returned, and I also returned with him. Now those people had left, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hung a curtain between himself and me, and the command of veiling was revealed.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ After marrying Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh radi Allahu anha, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam held a wedding feast (walimah) and invited people. Some guests, after eating, became engaged in conversation and remained seated for quite a long time. Due to his modesty, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not tell them to leave, even though he was feeling discomfort. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed the verses regarding the veil (hijab), and also mentioned the etiquettes of eating at others’ homes when invited.
➋ There were other reasons for the revelation of the command of hijab as well, among which was the desire of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu.
