Hadith 1047

It is narrated from Sayyida Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by the mosque where a group of women was sitting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) greeted them with a gesture of his hand and said: "Beware of being ungrateful to those who do good to you, do not be ungrateful to those who do good to you." One of them said: O Messenger of Allah! We seek Allah's refuge from being ungrateful for Allah's blessings. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, you do so. When the period of being unmarried is prolonged for any of you (and then she gets married), and she becomes angry with her husband, she says: By Allah! I have never seen any good from him, not even for a moment. This is being ungrateful for Allah's blessings, and this is being ungrateful to those who do good to you."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah states that the mention of the gesture of the hand is not authentic; the rest of the narration is authentic. (Jilbab al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah, 192, 194, al-Sahihah, Hadith: 823)
From this it is understood that men may also greet women with salam, but the condition that there is no fear of temptation (fitnah) will remain applicable in both cases.
