Hadith 1044

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، عَنْ عَنْبَسَةَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى الصِّبْيَانِ فِي الْكُتَّابِ.
It is narrated from Anbasa bin Ammar, may Allah have mercy on him, that he said: I saw Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, greeting the children in the school with salam.

Benefits and Issues:
The general rule is that the young should greet the elders with salam, but for the purpose of educating and nurturing children, and to spread the practice of salam, it is a Prophetic Sunnah to initiate salam to children. Furthermore, this also contains humility and modesty.
