It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that I passed by Abdur Rahman bin Umm al-Hakam and greeted him with salam, but he did not reply to me. He said: My nephew! There is no need for you to be upset. Someone better than him has replied to your salam, that is, the angel on his right side.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: Saying salam is a means of affection and love, and neglecting it can become a cause of mutual enmity. However, the one who initiates salam should continue his mission. If he does not receive a reply from people, there is no harm, because such a person is answered by Allah’s angels, who are in every way better than humans. This narration is also reported marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from other Companions. For its details, see the forthcoming ahadith and their benefits, and for further detail, see Silsilah Sahihah: 184.
